And For More Travel Advice We Turn To…Our Interns
When it comes to learning to get the most from your travels, you never know where you’ll get that brilliant nugget that makes all the difference. Like the friend who advises you to reserve an automatic vehicle in the U.K. so you aren’t totally flummoxed by driving on the “wrong” side of the road and car and then shifting with your left hand.
So we asked our NHS Global Events interns for their advice.
Julia Sajnaj, a senior at the University of Dayton, hopes to travel for a few months after graduating next spring, possibly backpacking through Europe or Australia. Julia, who had the opportunity to spend her semester abroad in Hawaii says, “Do something different and out of your comfort zone. It allows you to experience the opportunity to learn more about the world and yourself.”
Kathryn McIlwain is an incoming junior at Indiana University and loves helping others. This summer, she did a mission trip to South Africa to work with an orphanage. She advises, “Go off the beaten path and make the most of the unexpected. More often, than not, a trip won’t go exactly how you planned and sometimes that can be frustrating, but it can also make for a great memory.” Just ask her about the time her family got stuck in an elevator in London for three hours!
Billy Almond is a junior at the University of Illinois who loves to think outside the box to find an answer. He says, “Expect the unexpected. During winter break this past year, three of my friends and I drove down to New Orleans for the Alabama-Clemson football game. The weather forecast predicted mid-70s temperatures but in reality, it was in the upper 40s and I did not pack any warm clothes to wear. So I was forced to buy two jackets. Now I know to always have a contingency plan!”
