Reflecting on Anthony Bourdain’s Love of Travel
It was shocking news to learn that superstar chef Anthony Bourdain had passed away. He has touched the lives and hearts of many, leaving a legacy behind.
He shared so much in his books and during 10+ seasons of “Parts Unknown.” His love of food and travel has inspired many to see the world and try foods they’d never dream of tasting. We’d like to take a moment to share some of his poignant quotes about travel.
In a recent article in Money by Megan Leonhardt he talked about creating a hectic schedule of must-see tourist spots: “The sort of frenzied compression of time needed to take the tour, to see the sights, keeps you in a bubble that prevents you from having magic happen to you. Nothing unexpected or wonderful is likely to happen if you have an itinerary in Paris filled with the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.”
On booking a hotel: “I want to find a hotel in a neighborhood that has charm and character – the sort of place where I can walk to a café, sit down and feel the place. One with a unique look. Old colonial hotels are a favorite.”
In “Medium Raw,” he wrote: “Without experimentation, a willingness to ask questions and try new things, we shall surely become static, repetitive and moribund.”
On “No Reservations,” Anthony observed, “Travel isn’t always pretty. It isn’t always comfortable. Sometimes it hurts, it even breaks your heart. But that’s okay. The journey changes you; it should change you. It leaves marks on your memory, on your consciousness, on your heart and your body. You take something with you. Hopefully, you leave something good behind.”
And finally, this: “Don’t be afraid to just sit and watch.”
